The Bristol Pear

What they say

The closest pub to Selly Oak train station, and a great venue to while away some time waiting for your train. An 'It's A Scream' venue, this is the Mini-Me version of the Gun Barrels - which is situated at the other end of Selly Oak -, with a larger-than-life atmosphere generated by the largely student crowd who can take advantage of the numerous drinks offers. There's special events held in the large 'no frills' upstairs room, ranging from comedy to goth nights, and all-in-all this boozer offers a lot more than most other watering-holes in Selly.

What we think:
This is one of the smaller bars in Selly Oak, but still manages to make a large impression. Drinks offers here can be great and there is a relatively large selection. There's a chilled out atmosphere during the day although there tends to still be a few people drinking here. Only having a small selection of tables makes it feel quite personal and service is generally fast. Food is served during the day, is resonably priced and served quickly. Later this is another bar in Selly Oak which fills out with students and can get crowded. It's a nice place to go to with freinds and is very sociable. Definately a great end to a great bar crawl!

really nice ambience, and not as crowded as the other pubs in the area.

I find it very difficult to say anything about Scream pubs...they are all so similar and so mediocre.

Very poor customer service, Extremely poor standard of food, and prices which have risen considerably over the last year. Would not reccomend unless you are a student willing to put up with the crap service and poor food that the bristol pear offers. I would suggest walking down the other end of selly oak and going into the identical but slightly more superior gun barrells which seems to be managed better and has more staff at the bar.

after the rather hit and miss service at the bar, where choice of drinks is very limited. you will find the seating is disjointed and irregular, not really conducive to groups larger than 3. food is below par for the area and the pool tables do not have enough room surrounding them. music selection is good however and mirrors the student population that makes up the majority of patrons.
it has a strange, almost snobby atmosphere where the drinkers are seemingly in competition to be the 'coolest' there. whilst not aggressive it does not lend itself to a comfortable drinking environment
